Services for Critical Access Hospitals

AMS recognized early that Critical Access Hospital Status for rural hospitals would provide a financial advantage due to cost-based reimbursement for Medicare patients. AMS currently manages 18 hospitals, 15 of which are Critical Access, in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Although profit margins and cash flow have improved, the ability of management to financially monitor and understand the impact of Medicare revenues and patient mix is vital.

As a result, AMS provides (at no additional cost to the hospital) three interim cost reports to each facility. Since patient revenues, case mix, length of stay and volume all influence how the hospital will be reimbursed by the program, preparation of these interim cost reports help protect the hospital from any surprises around the calculation of Medicare contractual allowances and provides assurance to the Board that appropriate oversight is being completed. In addition, AMS completes the final cost reports that are submitted to the Fiscal Intermediary of the Medicare Program and the respective state agency.
